Statement -- Region 2 is home to
more than 30,000 members, key industries, and some of the nation’s finest
universities. Our membership is at
the forefront of exciting developments in information technology, computers,
telecommunications, and power deregulation. Yet, IEEE in Region 2 faces serious challenges that require
dynamic and focused leadership.
Much of the vibrancy felt in our industry has not yet translated into
new IEEE activities and membership growth. Retention of student members continues to be a formidable
task, and many working engineers feel that IEEE’s activities and publications
are not relevant to their needs.
As Region Director, I shall devote my time and energy to these areas. I intend to be an inward-looking Director who visits the different sections regularly. I shall speak and listen at Chapter and student meetings, and focus my efforts on creating programs that are meaningful to our practically-oriented membership. I shall work on stronger Industry-University relationships, new models of meetings and information exchange using the Internet, and strong outreach efforts to recent graduates and practicing engineers in industry.
